Servers now have redundant OC3 connections
In late August 2006, we relocated our servers to a data center in Denver, Colorado to take advantage of an opportunity to upgrade our backbone connectivity to multiple OC3 connections. Each OC3 is capable of 155.52 Mbps, or about 100 times the bandwidth of a T1 connection.
The move also decreased our latency by about 40%. Pings from our East Coast office formerly were returned in a little over 75msec; we now can ping the servers in under 50msec.
We have begun the transition from dual Opteron servers to quad Opteron servers.
Between April 23-24 2006, we migrated several databases to our new primary database server, a custom designed server powered by two dual-core 64-bit AMD Opteron processors clocked at 2.8 GHz. Admittedly, the end user will probably never notice that his catalog search is returned in 80msec rather than in the 110msec required when the database server was a mere dual processor unit. The main advantage would be throughput under heavier load.
That, and bragging rights for our system administrator.
